Connection to Black History -

The book follows the life story and upbringing of a powerful Black History figure, who rescued over 300 slaves all while risking her life. It allows for a quick read into her story, as well as reflecting a lot of positive themes throughout the book. It shows the resilience and bravery of Harriet Tubman, as well as the pain she endured throughout her life. It gives kids a positive message of fighting to always do the right thing, despite the consequences of it.

      Classroom Use (Grades 1-4):

• Ask students to make a timeline of Tubman’s life, and include a highlight of what part they believe to be the most important

• Compare and contrast Tubman to other Black historical figures

• Ask students to reflect on why Harriet Tubman is an important figure

• Have students write a letter to Harriet Tubman
